Pilipinas Shell Announces Shell National Active Chess – Mindanao (Cagayan De Oro) Leg Winners

The 18th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship Mindanao Leg held recently at the Cagayan de Oro City Tourism Hall finished off with Felix Shaun Balbona of University of San Jose Recoletos – Cebu and Jerwell Andoy of Jose Maria College - Davao emerging as leg champions in the Kiddies and Juniors division respectively.

Balbona (back row, 3rd from right) toppled other players in the Kiddies division with a score of 8.5 and 54.5 Bucholz. John Ray Batucan (back row, extreme right) of Dona Carmen Denia National High School - Davao posted 8 points and 59.5 Bucholz to win 1st runner- up, while Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano (front row) of University of San Carlos – BED (Cebu) garnered 8 points and 56.5 Bucholz to cop 2nd runner- up.

In the Juniors division, Andoy (back row, 3rd from left) finished strong with a score of 7.5 points and 44.5 Bucholz. Antonio Chavez Jr. (back row, 2nd from right) won 1st runner- up with 7 points and 40 Bucholz, while Rolly Parondo Jr. (back row, 2nd from left) of Oton, Iloilo settled for 2nd runner- up with 7 points and 37.5 Bucholz.

Each winner from the respective divisions received a cash prize, while the six finalists, also took home trophies aside from cash prizes which were handed over by Shell Sustainable Development Manager Ronald Suarez (extreme left). Also present to assist Mr. Suarez during the awarding of prizes were Cagayan de Oro City Councilor Atty. Adrian Barba, Cagayan de Oro City Sports Director Engr. Isidro Borja, Shell Retail Territory Managers Tabbee Bagadion and Anjo Santos, Shell Cagayan de Oro Depot Manager Jun Abina, Shell Cagayan de Oro Depot staff Nestor Tan, and Shell Cagayan de Oro dealers Jeremy Lim Lo Suy and Twinkle Corral.

Shell Active Chess is an annual programme of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation which supports the empowerment of the Filipino youth, in line with the company’s commitment to sustainable development . It is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, and supported by Shell V-Power, Shellane, Shell Helix, and McDonald's, in partnership with SM Megamall, SM Supermalls, Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao, Central Philippine University Iloilo, University of San Carlos Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro City Tourism.
