As in all the legs of the nationwide chess circuit, competition is expected to be tight in the 14-and-under and 20-and-under age group categories with the top three finishers in both divisions advancing to the national finals slated in October in Manila.
Richelieu Salcedo III of Rizal Technological University and Christian Nanola of Laguna College of Business and Arts upstaged their more fancied rivals to rule their respective divisions last year.
The 2010 Shell Active Chess kicked off last month with the NCR eliminations at SM Megamall and the Northern Luzon qualifier in Tuguegarao early in the month. Naga City will stage the other Southern Luzon qualifier on July 31-Aug. 1 at SM City Naga Event Center.
The series goes to Visayas on Aug. 14-15 for the Western Visayas leg while Cebu will stage the Central Visayas elims on Aug. 28-29. The seventh leg will be held Sept. 11-12 in Cagayan de Oro before the circuit winds up on Sept. 25-26 for the Mindanao leg in Davao.
Shell Active Chess is organized by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, and is the nation's longest running, grassroots-based chess tournament. Through the Shell Active Chess, Pilipinas Shell endeavours to empower the Filipino youth, in line with the company’s commitment to sustainable development.
Pilipinas Shell made this year's event more exciting by adding another leg in Cagayan de Oro. The competition has been expanded to an eight-leg series, played under the nine-round Swiss system format for the 14-and-under group and eight rounds for the juniors division, and slated over key cities in the country.
Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, and supported by Shell V-Power, Shellane, Shell Helix, and McDonald's, in partnership with SM Supermalls, Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao, Central Philippine University Iloilo, University of San Carlos Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro City Tourism.
