Triple B

In 2001, PSFI and the Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation–Shell Pandacan Installation spearheaded the implementation of Bawas Basura sa Barangay (Triple B), which is regarded as one of the most effective waste management programs in the City of Manila.

Triple B has three project components: provision of technical and capability-building trainings, information and education campaigns, and provision of materials recovery facility. By September 2004, operations for the materials recovery facility were in full blast. Sales not only came from the collection of recyclables from the installation but also from the residents of the barangays.

Since then, it has been able to give quarterly incentives to project staff based on their respective collections. Forty percent of Triple B’s quarterly earnings are allocated for staff incentives, 30 percent are used as revolving fund, while the remaining 30 percent are treated as barangay funds. Triple B has also been successfully replicated in other SciP worksites and sustained by concerned local communities.

Besides Triple B, PSFI implements other environment stewardship programs on need basis, most notable of which are coastal cleanup activities. During the construction of the Malampaya Platform in Sitio Agusuhin, a Community-Based Forest Resource Management was also instituted.
