Chua shared his insights as a chemical engineer in the petroleum industry, citing how the profession plays an essential role in formulating products like gasoline, lubricants, and biofuels that support modern life. The audience appreciated how advancements in chemical engineering helped in the discovery and development of new, cleaner fuels like the Gas to Liquids (GTL) technology, which is both economically and environmentally viable.
He also presented the partnerships that Shell has formed with various organisations and institutions to address pressing issues like climate change and the different programmes implemented by Shell that demonstrate social responsibility, highlighting efforts on environmental preservation. The two-day conference organised by the De La Salle University-Manila aims to provide a venue for interaction among technologists and experts in the public and private sectors on research and development in chemical engineering, establish and implement institutional linkages for the advancement of science and technology, and improve Chemical Engineering Education in the ASEAN region. The conference was held on January 22-23, 2009 at the Century Park Hotel Manila.
