Pandacan Scale Down Project honoured with an Environmental Merit
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Michael T. Defensor honoured Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation’s (PSPC) Pandacan Scale Down “Green Buffer Zone” Project with a Merit Citation last 20 April 2005 during the First National Summit on the State of Philippine Rivers held at the Mabini Social Hall of Malacanang Palace. Former DENR Secretary and Earth Day Network Philippines Chairperson Bebet Gozun and Sagip Pasig Movement Executive Director Myrna Jimenez were also among the personalities who signed the citation.
Pilipinas Shell was one of the many socially responsible corporations nationwide who was honoured that night. This citation was given to companies and institutions that contributed to the conservation of the environment, particularly through its compliance to the DENR Standards and exerting efforts for the rehabilitation of the rivers. External Affairs for Distribution John B. Arnaldo, and Sustainable Development Manager Mylene M. Santos, accepted the certificate.
The two Barangay Chairmen of Shell’s community in Pandacan, Barangays 833 and 834, recently endorsed the Shell Pandacan Linear Park “Green Buffer Zone” Project as an entry to the National Dangal ng Ilog Award 2005. This award is given by an environmental NGO, Sagip Pasig Movement (SPM), to communities, companies, or institutions nationwide whose exemplary effort helped conserve and preserve the environment and the state of the Philippine rivers.
This is SPM’s most prestigious award, which selects industries with the most exemplary environmental performance. Unilever Philippines is the first Dangal Hall of Fame Awardee, Nestle Philippines and SC Johnsons both have two Dangal Awards, while a host of deserving others has been given one.
The Barangay Chairmen further cited in their letter the sustainable health and environmental-related projects of Shell Pandacan and Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc. (PSFI) in their barangay such as the regular drainage de-clogging that greatly minimized the flooding in their barangays, the Triple B (Bawas Basura sa Barangay) waste management and segregation program participated in by the six (6) surrounding barangays of Pandacan Shell Installation, the Pasig River Clean-Up drive, and most specially the creation of a linear park for the community.
The Dangal Ng Ilog Awarding, spearheaded by Former DENR Secretary Bebet Gozun and held during the summit was one of the events organized by DENR, Earth Day Network Philippines (EDNP), and Sagip Pasig Movement (SPM) in celebration of Earth Day 2005.
