Health and Safety

Safety is of paramount importance and we've included basic safety information here, along with Shell Gas (LPG) Philippines Inc.'s Health and Safety policy. There is also guidance on how to use cylinders and information on how to keep your bulk tank installation safe.

In the unlikely event of a gas leak, follow the step-by-step guide below and contact Shell Gas (LPG) Philippines Inc. without delay.

  • Basic Safety

A few brief safety tips to help ensure a safe environment.

To help you ensure a safe environment while using LPG from Shell, here are a few brief safety tips:

    • LPG from Shell is flammable like all petroleum fuels. It must be stored away from sources of ignition and in a well-ventilated area.
    • LPG from Shell can be detected by a typically unpleasant odour of gas.
    • LPG vapour is heavier than air. Any leakage will sink to the ground and accumulate in low lying areas.
    • There are special tanks which are specifically designed for use underground.
    • LPG from Shell expands rapidly when the temperature rises. So whenever a container is filled, sufficient space is left for expansion.
    • LPG from Shell will cause natural rubber and some plastics to deteriorate. Only use hoses and other equipment specifically designed for LPG.
    • Although LPG from Shell is non-toxic, it is an asphyxiant and it’s abuse is highly dangerous. Treat LPG with respect.
  • HSE Commitment and Policy

The safety of our customers, our neighbours, our contractors and our staff is of paramount importance to Shell Gas (LPG) Philippines Inc.

  • Bulk Tank Safety

Shell Gas (LPG) Philippines Inc. will ensure that the LPG tank is located in a safe place and that the necessary devices are in place to protect the tank, pipework and appliances.

To take care of your installation, you should:

    • Keep rubbish and anything combustible well away from the tanks and ensure weeds/grass are kept down. Don’t use chlorate based weed killer as this can be a fire hazard.
    • Keep any security fences provided for the tank in good condition. Keep the gate(s) locked shut. If there is no fence, keep the tank valve cover locked and keep the keys in a handy place.
    • Only let Shell Gas (LPG) Philippines Inc. or a Shell authorised engineer work on the installation.
    • Be Familiar with the operating instructions and the emergency actions. Make sure that everyone in the property is aware of them.
    • Keep people not involved with the installation well away from it.
    • Keep vehicles well away from the installation.
    • Don’t do any modifications which may affect the installation eg altering fire walls, erecting sheds or fences, or installing electrical equipment near the tank. If in doubt, ask Shell Gas (LPG) Philippines Inc. for advice. The tank must not be painted by anyone other than Shell Gas (LPG) Philippines Inc. or Shell authorised personnel.
    • Don’t let anyone smoke or have any electrical equipment, vehicles, bonfires, barbeques or other sources of ignition near the installation. Make sure the “No Smoking“ signs and any other notices are maintained.
    • Ensure that any above ground pipework from the tank to the point of use is protected against accidental damage and is properly supported. For underground piping, make sure you know the route it takes and avoid putting anything in the ground which may damage the pipework or the tank.
    • Industrial and Commercial LPG users have a responsibility for the checking and maintenance of external LPG pipework.
