It puts stress in terms of new investments and new priorities for the fleet companies.

We've also seen, unfortunately, increasing geopolitical conflicts. In the last one decade, the number of geopolitical conflicts have doubled overall. And this puts tremendous pressures on supply chain disruption and rising fuel costs. And both of these topics immensely impact the fleet market. We also see, increasingly, use of digital technologies. But digital is not new. But what is imminent is digital is becoming a backbone of both trade and truck by itself.

And that said, talking about the fleet sector specifically, for us CRT might not be as glamorous as the passenger car market, but it is essential to remember that it is an important backbone and integral part of the economy. It contributes to about 10% to 12% of the GDP, and it accounts for, on average, about 20% to 30% of the vehicles on road. This particular sector is facing immense challenges, immense transformation around macroeconomical challenges and impact, technological evolution, new product launches, regulatory pressures. And so fleet managers and shippers and hauliers and business owners are all having to balance and manage a huge amount of pressure from society and from governments to decarbonise and to reduce emissions. But they need to also maintain a very sleek operation and cost-effective business.

According to the International Energy Agency, road transport is actually due to account for over 16% of carbon emissions globally in 2025. And what is interesting is that this is not a magic wand, one-size-fits-all solution. I wish it would be. It would be so much simpler if that was the case. But as Mubarak said, this is very varied. It varies depending on the composition of your fleet, the size of your fleet, the type of journeys that that fleet does, the length, but also the destination. Is it city, is it rural? What are the local and the national regulations where you are? So many different considerations.

So I think fleet managers need to make sure that they select what is the right approach to decarbonise. And that one has to be reliable, because it needs to mitigate all of the operational disruption. It needs to be efficient in that it needs to be implemented with ease. And I think it needs to be also cost effective, because they need to, of course, maintain competitiveness. Our strategy, for example, helps fleet operators fuel those operations today, and then understand how can they over time transition to that low-carbon and no-carbon transport solutions.

Fun fact, we have actually been doing this since 1932 when we introduced the first very simple payment card solution actually for fuel purchases in aviation, for pilots. And this actually was a whole 18 years before the first world's credit card, which was introduced by Diners Club, if you remember Diners Club. So as our customers’ requirements continue to evolve, our offerings also, of course, have to evolve. We cannot continue on the 1932 simple payment offer. But we do need to continue partnering with our customers and making sure that we are that preferred mobility partner, that we can help make their journeys better.

Now, if I go into specifics, just a few examples. Across Europe but also in the UK and in parts of Asia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, we have quite a wide range of energy solutions. So whilst we have many customers still, of course, very dependent on diesel, as Mubarak said, and this will be for years, we also have low-carbon fuels, like Shell Renewable Diesel, which is our brand of HVO100. By the end of this year, we'll have it in more than 90 service stations across Europe, in a handful of countries. We also have Shell BioLNG. You talked about biomethane. What would you do in that space?

Video footage

The camera cuts to a wider shot of the studio and then to a medium close-up view of Olcay as she picks up her questioning of Janine.

Janine Albrecht-Webb

And we know all how important a good night's sleep is. I think I'll just share a personal experience. A couple of years ago, I spent a day in a truck with a trucker driving across the UK and making deliveries, opening the curtains, closing the curtains, delivering the pallets, and really seeing what life is like on the front line. And it's a really difficult job. My hands were sore the day after of all of the work. But also, I learnt how difficult it is for them to navigate where to stop in their mandatory breaks, where can they park, where can they get a good coffee, how unsympathetic all the drivers on the road are to trucks. I have much more respect since that experience than I had before.

So I will just mention a couple of things. One is on that navigation and convenience, just being able to understand where you can stop. So, for example, through the Shell app, you have the opportunity to see all of the different 40,000 Shell-branded sites, and how can you navigate there, and where you can stop, what is open, what facilities there are.

But also, once you get there, then also we have a great loyalty programme that allows drivers, B2B drivers included, to have personal rewards. So they would get their personal points, and they can use it on discounted fuel, on coffee, on food, on car wash, even on partner's vouchers to spend in stores across Europe. So between the convenience, the rewarding part with loyalty, I think these two things help with drivers being able to actually come and turn up to work and have a tiny bit more easy life than if they wouldn't with us.

Video footage

Medium close-up footage captures Janine smiling in response to Olcay’s question, then responding, glancing between the camera and her fellow speakers.

Olcay Karacelebi

Thank you, Janine and Mubarak. Like Mubarak and Janine were saying earlier, when we're out speaking to fleet operators, the concerns are clear. One, it's cost. Two is actually operational management. Three is then navigating the regulations, things like the payload limits that James mentioned. And these aren’t just technical challenges. These are actually strategic ones.

So our own research, when we've spoken to customers, the biggest barrier is cost, with only 21% actually having decarbonisation as a KPI in their goals. So, as James already alluded to and shared with us, that they've got a mixture of different solutions already in place. You've got electric trucks, which we're obviously helping them out with, with our public charging station in Markham Moor. They're deploying HVO across their fleet, but also still running traditional diesel.

So, it's not a one-size-fits-all. And I think that's really what we're emphasising to customers, that you're going to have to be dynamic, you’re going to have to be pragmatic in how you go about that journey. But to come back to your question, Olcay, yes, the concern is definitely there. I think that with the right plan in place, it is all solvable. And that for us is really where the exciting opportunity lies.

Video footage

Euan continues in close-up as he presents, glancing frequently in Olcay’s direction.

Olcay Karacelebi

Yes. So, initially, it's not going to be a one-solution-fits-all. So there are going to be a mixture, and different products available out there to customers. But you can avoid, reduce and compensate your emissions. So I think this ultimately led us to creating what we've called the Accelerate to Zero programme, which was set up several years ago now.

Video footage

Euan continues in close-up as he presents his insights, glancing frequently in Olcay’s direction.

Euan Moir

And it’s really about trying to bring that uncertainty, with all of this going on, to a tangible plan, so whether that is EV charging, whether it's biofuels, renewable natural gas. So the first one we call is fleet assessment. And this is very much looking at the current operations as it is today, really using tangible insights and data to give us a really clear baseline. The second one then is what we call opportunity mapping. So this is actually, once we've understood where you are, what could be deployed today, so whether that's a low-carbon fuel, whether that's route optimisation through telematics, whether that's electric vehicle charging.

The third one then is infrastructure planning. So once we've understood, okay, you could deploy EV charging or you could access biofuels, do your sites have the readiness to take on that new infrastructure that needs to come in? Where would you refuel if you were going to take biofuels?

And then lastly, roadmap development. This is very much just bringing it all together into a tangible plan that really aligns with the business's goals, their own budgets, but also the regulation timelines. So, again, it's just really about getting that baseline first and foremost, is critical, and then obviously taking that forward into a tangible plan where we can deliver environmental and commercial benefits as soon as possible.

Video footage

Return to Euan in close-up as he presents.

Olcay Karacelebi

I think, Euan, those four steps are very clear. What I want to just hear a little bit more, more around those solutions, especially avoid and then reduce and compensate for emissions. How does it really work?

Video footage

Return to Olcay speaking in close-up.

Euan Moir

Indeed. So when we talk about avoid, reduce, compensate, Olcay, it's very much around the different product sets that we have available today for customers that can enable them to do that. So depending on where the customer goes through that process, as I said, in the Accelerator Zero programme, and we get to that point with the plan, if we're able to deploy electric vehicles or electric charging into their fleets, this is where we would look at then avoiding emissions.

So we've been on a bit of a journey ourselves within Shell Fleet Solutions over the last couple of years to really actually understand and build out the right capabilities for fleet customers to use. So we've just only recently announced, we've now got a million charge points available through our Shell Card for customers to access, and that's globally. Here in the UK, it's around 50,000. And then the last one just to maybe mention is Shell BioLNG. And this is actually using a feedstock. And when you again compare that to traditional B7 diesel, you are reducing your emissions. It's a very intense question because it's just two. And that said, also fleet can be classified both passenger as well as commercial fleet. But let me try my best to answer both. Number one, when you look into fleet sector overall, the fleet in terms of passenger car vehicle or passenger fleet, it accounts for over 50% of the European market sales.

[Text displays]

Mubarak Moosa – Associate Partner, Frost & Sullivan

Video footage

As Mubarak Moosa begins his response, the camera cuts from a wide view of the studio and panel to a close-up of Mubarak speaking. And that said, we expect the growth of fleet market in Europe and globally. Now, talking about commercial vehicle fleets, we have spoken about the strength and the trends happening. What we also know, I like to stress the fact that the governments in many countries are sinking money in infrastructure projects. And of course, you need trucks to move to make these projects happen, number one. You need goods to be delivered, not just from an e-commerce standpoint. You need food, you need pharmaceuticals. So, definitely, it’s going to drive commercial vehicle fleets as well as vans in this context.

Now, the second part of the question is on the mobility aspect. We have been speaking about EV, we have been speaking about autonomous, multi-modality for quite some time now. But what we see quite surprising in the recent times is the customer behaviour, reflections, the investments. And these are quite interesting to observe.

One recent trend I can spot on is EV specifically, if I can mention. Of course, it’s growing, but the growth momentum has slowed down. We see a pickup for hybrids, especially plug-in hybrids, as it offers a sweet compromise in offering the same level of… Or not same, maybe to an extent reduction in carbon emissions, and also reduces the stress on the charging infrastructure.

We can also expect to see, going forward… Last year, we saw the announcement of robotaxis, for example. We have the success stories of Waymo. We can expect to see autonomous mobility rolled out. I am trying to multitask at the moment, because, Janine, we have so many good questions. The second question is your question. Shell is known for fossil fuels. What are low carbon fuels? What are the pros and cons?

Video footage

As Olcay resumes moderating, interacting with her tablet and then turning to Janine to pose the next question, the camera alternates between wide shots of the studio and panellists and a close-up of her.

Janine Albrecht-Webb

Thank you, Olcay. And I hope that Shell is known for far more than fossil fuels, especially now that we have really transitioned into a wider energy play.

[Text displays]

Janine Albrecht-Webb – GM of Mobility UK, Shell

Video footage

As Janine laughingly begins her response, the camera cuts from a wide view of the studio and panel to a close-up of her speaking. A white textbox with a yellow accent briefly appears in the lower left, displaying her name and title.

Janine Albrecht-Webb

But low carbon fuels, really good question, things like renewable diesel or LNG, BioLNG. Let me just say a few things about what they are. If I start with renewable diesel, it's also known as HVO. And HVO stands for hydrotreated vegetable oil. And what this means is that is a product made with 100% renewable feedstocks, things like animal fats, vegetable oils, used cooking oil. And as a result, they have no fossil in the feedstock, and they have lower emissions.

Now, they are a drop-in fuel, which means that your engine today can be running on normal diesel, and tomorrow can be running on HVO or renewable diesel without having to make any modifications, which, of course, is very easy. And if I look, for example, at the product of Shell Renewable Diesel, which is our brand of the product, we offer up to 90% CO2-equivalent emission reduction in the lifecycle of the product compared to B7 or standard diesel.

Now, just for clarification, lifecycle is assessed across the board in a way where you look at the feedstock production, at the feedstock transportation, then the fuel production and transportation, then the distribution, and then finally how it is consumed or used or combusted. And that is up to 90%. We provide even a product statement to show the actual intensity of the carbon on the product.

If I look at LNG, LNG is a fossil product, but actually, of course, BioLNG is the equivalent of renewable diesel for the gas engines. So it is made with, again, 100% renewable feedstock, like manure, so biomethane, and then it comes into the product, and then it also reduces greatly these emissions. It is also a drop-in fuel if you have already a gas engine. Also, carbon and product statements are available for this.

The one thing that I would just mention on renewable diesel, and just picking on something that James mentioned on the video, two things to watch yet are, one, it is not as widely available of course yet as standard diesel. Two, there is a cost premium, because the feedstock is much more expensive. But either way, these are technologies that are available, and that whilst our no-carbon solutions really, really ramp up and permeate the world, at least there is action that everybody can take, to consider.

Video footage

As Janine continues her response, the camera stays on her in close-up.

Olcay Karacelebi

Oh, there is a very comprehensive EV question. I'll go for Euan and Mubarak at the same time. So let's start with you, Euan. What are the EV technological developments that you see in the next five years? There is a concern on lack of EV infrastructure, whether it's true or not. And the final question embedded into that was, are there any more truck stops that we are planning for eHGV, planned in the UK?

Video footage

The camera alternates between wide shots of studio and close-ups of Olcay as she continues moderating. She interacts with her tablet and turns to pose the next question to Euan and Mubarak Moosa.

Euan Moir

Great. Yes, firstly maybe on the first question on developments, the next five years.

[Text displays]

Euan Moir – Head of Fleet Solutions, Shell

Video footage

The scene shifts to a close-up view of Euan beginning his response. A white textbox with a yellow accent briefly appears in the lower left, displaying his name and title

Euan Moir

So I think maybe two things would stand out for me. One would be the battery range and improvement that we're seeing there. I think initially, when we look back through our surveys that we do every year to our customer base, that kind of anxiety around how far could I go in the vehicles that were available at that point in time, that is improving year on year. OEMs are bringing much more to the markets, both from a passenger vehicle, and obviously increasingly in our eHGV segment as well, so I would say the battery range.

And then coinciding with that would be the technology available from a charging speed perspective. So obviously today, we've deployed a use case of megawatt charging in our Amsterdam office, and it's for trucks and also for electric boats. The plan will be to deploy that. And we will see that becoming more and more present, particularly for eHGVs, but also for passenger vehicles, having that ability to actually take on a higher charging speed.

I think maybe just quickly on the infrastructure concern, I'll come to Mubarak. I think if you look maybe just in the UK, where we are today, that year on year, we're actually seeing around 22% on the public charging infrastructure availability. But obviously, you've got to look a bit broader than that. So it's not just on the go.

So if you are looking to transition into electric vehicles, you would consider things like charging at home, charging at your workplace, charging at your depot. So the actual availability goes beyond just the infrastructure that you probably are used to as a fuel forecourt, but actually it's going to be a bit broader than that. So I don't know, Mubarak, if you've got anything else maybe to add to that.

Video footage

The camera remains on Euan in close-up as he continues his response, with brief cutaways to a close-up of Mubarak nodding in agreement, as well as a medium shot of Olcay and Mubarak at their table also nodding in response to Euan’s point.

Mubarak Moosa

I think you covered it fairly comprehensively. But a couple of things from our analysis. Number one, charging infrastructure for fleets, commercial fleets, is not as easy as your passenger car fleets. So what we expect is, over the years, around half a million chargers expected globally in the next five years’ time period.

What we would see is a phased development. Number one, maybe right now we'll see a lot more, say, depot charging, a lot more, say, private charging primarily. But over the period, we might see collaboration between different ecosystem partners here. It's already happening, by the way, ecosystem partners like Shell and the vehicle manufacturers. You guys have the partnership in place.

But what I'm trying to say is, between fleets, between logistics companies, you might have an open collaboration in order to charge your truck, not specifically on one specific depot of yours, but it might be in other depots. So it’ll happen in phases, and that’ll drive the overall infrastructure, we believe.

Video footage

As Mubarak Moosa takes the floor, the camera cuts between wide shots of the studio and panellists and close-ups of Mubarak, intercut also with a close-up of Euan and then a medium-angle shot of Euan and Janine at their table, listening attentively.

Euan Moir

Great. Janine laughs while Euan continues, smiling.

Euan Moir

So, yes, I think as that market continues to evolve, obviously you heard from James at DFDS earlier, we're hearing that from similar customers that we're engaging with on that topic. So my answer there would be, watch this space. But my ask would also be that if you are developing that capability within your own fleet, we'd love to hear from you.

So, obviously from our perspective, where we want to deploy is where that demand is going to be. So the more we can know where that is coming from, that gives us assurance that putting that infrastructure in place, particularly on the go, that we are going to see that utilisation, particularly from an investment case perspective. So there will be more, but I think that the plea here would be, if you have any demand, please let us know.

Video footage

The camera remains on Janine and Euan in medium close-up during Euan’s response.

Olcay Karacelebi

Yes. Janine talked about obviously your experience earlier. I think just trying to dig into the recent survey that we actually did, I think something like 88%, it was around that kind of figure, of drivers actually, once they've switched to EV, preferred being in an EV over a traditional ICE vehicle. So, both the experience of driving it, no emissions etc. So, yes, I think we're seeing that continued trend from customers, and feedback that once fleets do switch to EVs, that there is a preferred preference versus traditional ICE vehicles.

Video footage

Close-up footage captures Euan addressing the question while glancing frequently at the other panellists, with a cutaway to a medium close-up view of Janine and Euan as Janine listens attentively, nodding in agreement.

Olcay Karacelebi

Thank you. The term “Product with carbon credits” does not imply that the product is a substitute for switching to low-emission energy solutions or reducing fossil fuel usage. Although carbon credits aim to compensate for CO2 emissions, actual emissions will still be released into the atmosphere. These carbon credits have been generated in accordance with international carbon standards, but the compensation is based on best available estimates and may not be exact. Shell businesses encourage their customers to focus first on emissions that can be avoided or reduced and only then compensate the remaining emissions through the purchase and retirement of voluntary carbon credits.

“Product with carbon credits” indicates that Shell will engage in a transaction where an amount of CO2 equivalent [LD1] to the estimated emissions from the product’s lifecycle including raw material extraction, transport, production, distribution and usage / end-of-life is intended to be compensated through the purchase and retirement of carbon credits. All statements other than statements of historical fact are, or may be deemed to be, forward-looking statements. Forward-looking statements are statements of future expectations that are based on management’s current expectations and assumptions and involve known and unknown risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results, performance or events to differ materially from those expressed or implied in these statements. Forward-looking statements include, among other things, statements concerning the potential exposure of Shell to market risks and statements expressing management’s expectations, beliefs, estimates, forecasts, projections and assumptions. Shell’s NCI also includes the emissions associated with the production and use of energy products produced by others which Shell purchases for resale. Shell only controls its own emissions. The use of the terms Shell’s “net carbon intensity” or NCI is for convenience only and not intended to suggest these emissions are those of Shell plc or its subsidiaries.

Shell’s net-zero emissions target

Shell’s operating plan and outlook are forecasted for a three-year period and ten-year period, respectively, and are updated every year. They reflect the current economic environment and what we can reasonably expect to see over the next three and ten years. Accordingly, the outlook reflects our combined Scope 1, Scope 2 and NCI targets over the next ten years. However, Shell’s operating plan and outlook cannot reflect our 2050 net-zero emissions target, as this target is outside our planning period. Such future operating plans and outlooks could include changes to our portfolio, efficiency improvements and the use of carbon capture and storage and carbon credits. In the future, as society moves towards net-zero emissions, we expect Shell’s operating plans and outlooks to reflect this movement. However, if society is not net zero in 2050, as of today, there would be significant risk that Shell may not meet this target.

Forward-Looking non-GAAP measures

This content may contain certain forward-looking non-GAAP measures such as adjusted earnings and divestments. We are unable to provide a reconciliation of these forward-looking non-GAAP measures to the most comparable GAAP financial measures because certain information needed to reconcile those non-GAAP measures to the most comparable GAAP financial measures is dependent on future events some of which are outside the control of Shell, such as oil and gas prices, interest rates and exchange rates.
