Shell Joins the Historic Race for Pasig River

Shell companies in the Philippines (or Shell) joined the rest of the nation in the historic ‘Run for the Pasig River’, an attempt to restore the beauty of the Pasig River, a river intricately woven into the Filipino identity. The Shell contingent, composed of employees, contractors, Pandacan communities, Pilipinas Shell Foundation staff, Shell Eco-marathon Asia students and Shell dealers, participated in the 3K, 5K and 10K race categories on October 10, 2010 at the SM Mall of Asia.

Organised by the ABS-CBN Foundation- Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP), the momentous event witnessed 116, 086 Filipinos from all walks of life come together for a common cause- to restore the Pasig River and revive a nation. The Run for Pasig River made history last Sunday as it broke the current world record on the largest eco-foot race in the world previously held by the 1988 ‘Bay to Breakers’ race in San Francisco, USA.

In its continuing thrust to help preserve the environment and save the Pasig River, Shell has signified support for the KBPIP Movement by allotting Php15 million from 2009 to 2011, which will be used for the building and beautification of easements along the Estero de Paco, as well as for the rehabilitation of the Paco Market, considered as a major contributor of pollution to the Pasig River.

The Pasig River was once known as one of the cleanest rivers in the Philippines, serving as an important means of transport, lifeline and centre of economic activity for the Manilenos. Through the successful Run for the Pasig River, there is hope for once again bringing back its real beauty and grand heritage.
