Developing courage and conquering challenges
Carl, Indirect Tax Advisor and ManagerFrom caring, inspirational leaders to experienced colleagues, support and learning at Shell is constant.

Searching for somewhere to grow
Tax is often seen as something multidimensional, but as an indirect tax advisor and manager, I see just how vital it is to Shell’s Powering Progress strategy. Tax plays a key role in Shell delivering the energy solutions of tomorrow and today: it’s central to compliance, global operations, and keeping the company running smoothly.
After completing my BSc in Accounting I handled end-to-end accounts for a hotel – payroll, inventory, you name it. As an innate introvert, dealing with so many people wasn’t easy and, two years in, I wanted a change. I knew I wanted more than just a job; I wanted a place where I could grow. Shell, with its global presence and multi-cultural environment, felt like the right move.
Embracing a Culture of Support
From day one, Shell’s been about growth. Whether mastering tax intricacies across markets, mentoring others, or managing teams, I’ve been encouraged to stretch beyond my comfort zone. As someone who is naturally shy, I found managing people daunting at first—but soon viewed it as a challenge to enjoy and grow from.
Shell’s culture of care made all the difference. Here, you’ll always find help. I live with an in-born orthopedic condition – my right foot is significantly smaller and shorter than my left, impacting my day-to-day life. Weight-bearing is difficult, I’m more prone to gout, and I experience pain. Shell’s support systems—from flexible work arrangements and onsite health services to a gym that helped me lose over 15 kilos—have empowered me to manage my health and thrive.
Shell’s commitment to accessibility is real. From SMART offices designed with inclusivity in mind to the enABLE network that champions Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), support is embedded in the way we work.

Training powers progress
That support is everywhere. Two years in, I helped launch ‘Train and Sustain’, to tackle high attrition rates in tax departments. We listened, dug deep, addressed skills gaps, and the attrition rate plummeted. In fact, the programme was so successful it was no longer needed. In helping others grow, I found my own confidence and leadership voice.
I’ve found that at Shell: opportunity is everywhere. You just need to reach out and grab it. From caring, inspirational leaders to experienced colleagues, support and learning is constant. That’s why I’ve been here 14 years – and there’s more to come. Shell isn’t just where I work: it’s where I’ve become the best version of myself.
