Feeling seen, valued and empowered

Attracted to an inclusive culture
Growing up, I always knew I was different – even though I was treated like everyone else. I have Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency (PFFD), a rare condition affecting one in every 200,000 people, which means I don’t have thigh bones, so I’m shorter than most people.
Yet I never let it define me. In fact, it pushed me to excel. At school, I strived for perfection, putting pressure on myself to never make mistakes. That mindset shifted when I joined Shell.
I’d heard of Shell but never thought someone like me – a Person With a Disability (PWD) – could work here. Then my mother’s friend, who worked at the company, told me about the inclusive culture and strong support for employees with disabilities. I hadn’t imagined an energy company could be so open and accessible. I was inspired to apply – and it changed my life.
A culture that powers growth
I joined Group Services Recoveries in 2022. We handle transactions across East Asia and it’s fast-paced, with every country having its own systems, regulations and ways of working.
Initially, I felt overwhelmed. The pressure to be perfect crept back in. But Shell’s culture is different. My team was welcoming and supportive. They introduced me to the learner mindset – a core part of Shell’s leadership principles. I learned that it’s okay not to know everything. It’s okay to ask questions. Growth matters more than perfection. You see these principles embedded in the inclusive culture.

Inclusion in the details
At Shell, diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) aren’t just words: they’re built into how we work. You feel it everywhere. From smart workplaces supporting accessibility and mirrors placed at the right height so I can see my full reflection, to the security guards who make sure I can reach the elevator buttons. When you experience these thoughtful touches daily, it makes such a difference – you feel truly seen, valued and empowered.
Being part of enABLE , Shell’s network supporting PWDs, I see how much care, attention and work goes into including everyone. Yet we don’t just work hard, we also have fun. Like swapping our typical Friday meeting for game time, which lifts our spirits, builds trust and brings us closer together.
These thoughtful details – from the mirrors and the mindset, to shared moments – make Shell a special place to work, giving me a real sense of belonging.
