Laguna’s Pride Seals Shell Active Chess National Kiddies Division

Christian Nañola (front row, middle) of Laguna College of Business and Arts sealed a score of 7 points at the end of the nine-round Swiss system tournament format of the recently concluded 18th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship (Shell Active Chess) at the Event Center of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City, thus making him this year’s national champion in the Kiddies division category.

A three-time Shell Active Chess finalist, Nañola came out as a strong contender in the two-day finals tournament despite being a runner up in the Shell Active Chess Southern Luzon leg in Batangas City. With perseverance, faith, and proper training, he ruled his squad and took home a Php20,000 cash prize and trophy.

La Salle Greenhills’ Giovanni Mejia (front row, right) finished 1st runner up with a score of 6.5 points with 51 Bucholz points.  He was followed by Jerad Docena (front row, left) of Far Eastern University (FEU)-FERN who settled for 2nd runner up, garnering 6 points with 45.5 Bucholz points. They both took home a trophy and cash prizes of Php15,000 and Php10,000, respectively.

Placed at 3rd and 4th runners up (not in photo) were Felix Shaun Balbona of University of San Jose Recoletos (Cebu) and FEU-FERN’s Paul Robert Evangelista. Both of them took home cash prizes.

Prizes were handed over by (left-right): Pilipinas Shell Government and Media Relations Manager Mich Cruz, Asia’s First Grandmaster Eugene Torre, and Grandmaster Wesley So.

Shell Active Chess is an annual programme of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation which supports the empowerment of the Filipino youth, in line with the company’s commitment to sustainable development . It is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, and supported by Shell V-Power, Shellane, Shell Helix, and McDonald's, in partnership with SM Megamall, SM Supermalls, Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao, Central Philippine University Iloilo, University of San Carlos Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro City Tourism.
