2010 Shell Active Chess Heads Upnorth

The expanded 2010 Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships moves to its second leg for the Northern Luzon eliminations to be held on July 3-4 at the Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao gym in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

Interested participants may already register for the Northern Luzon leg by downloading forms from www.shell.com.ph/shell_chess. Registration, worth P50, is also open at selected schools, chess clubs and municipal/provincial government offices and at various Shellane Showrooms nationwide. For details, participants may contact leg coordinators Mariano Cabugos at (078) 844-0513 or Alex Dinoy at 0916-6882682 or 0921-3806902 or (02) 400-3248.

Competition in the Northern Luzon leg is again expected to be keen in both the 14-and-under and 20-and-under age group categories the way University of Baguio’s Leonardo Abalos and McDominique Lagula of FEU topped their respective divisions via tie-breaks in last year’s competition.

The top three finishers in both classes will advance to the national finals slated in October in Manila.

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, the organizer of the event, made the 2010 competition more exciting by adding another leg to the circuit in  the Cagayan de Oro in September making it an eight-stage series this year.

The 2010 Shell Active Chess circuit kicked off last week with the NCR eliminations at SM Megamall. Batangas will host the third leg on July 17-18 for the Southern Luzon elims while Naga City will stage the fourth leg for the Southern Luzon qualifier on July 31-Aug. 1.

Iloilo will hold the fifth leg on Aug. 14-15 for the Western Visayas elims while Cebu will host the Central Visayas leg on Aug. 28-29. The seventh leg will be held Sept. 11-12 in Cagayan de Oro before the circuit winds up on Sept. 25-26 for the Mindanao leg in Davao.

The top three finishers in all legs will advance to the grand finals slated Oct. 23-24 at SM Megamall. Each leg will be an eight-round Swiss system event for the juniors and nine-round for the kiddies. The grand finals will be a nine-round tournament for both divisions.

Now on its 18th year, Shell Active Chess endeavours to empower the Filipino youth through the sport, in line with Pilipinas Shell’s commitment to sustainable development.

Shell Active Chess is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, and supported by Shell V-Power, Shellane, Shell Helix, and McDonald's, in partnership with SM Supermalls, Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao, Central Philippine University Iloilo, University of San Carlos Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro City Tourism.
