SNYACC – Northern Luzon Leg Winners

Seven-year old Stephen Rome Pangilinan and 2009 Shell Active Chess Kiddies division national champion Vince Angelo Medina emerged as leg champions in the Kiddies and Juniors division respectively during the recently concluded 18th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship Northern Luzon Leg at Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao.

Pangilinan (front row, middle) finished strong with a perfect score of 9 points and 54.5 Bucholz. Marc Kevin Labog (front row, right) of Solano National High School – Nueva Vizcaya won 1st runner- up with 7.5 points and 59 Bucholz, while Paul Benjamin Casiano (front row, left) of Bulacan State University Laboratory High School settled for 2nd runner- up with 7.5 points and 57 Bucholz.

Medina (back row, middle) toppled other players in the Juniors division with a score of 7.5 pts and 45.5 Bucholz. Also from FEU-FERN are runners up Kevin Mirano (back row, 2nd from left) and McDominique Lagula (back row, 2nd from right) who both have 7 points, but Mirano with 45 Bucholz points advantage over Lagula who has 41 Bucholz points. All three earned seats to compete in the grand finals.

Each winner from the respective divisions received a cash prize, while the six finalists, also took home trophies aside from cash prizes which were handed over by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation Sustainable Development Manager Ronald Suarez (far right) and Tuguegarao City Sports Coordinator Mariano Cabugos (far left).

Shell Active Chess is an annual programme of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation which supports the empowerment of the Filipino youth, in line with the company’s commitment to sustainable development. It is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, and supported by Shell V-Power, Shellane, Shell Helix, and McDonald's, in partnership with SM Supermalls, Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao, Central Philippine University Iloilo, University of San Carlos Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro City Tourism.
