The Finance Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX) with the Dutch financial giant ING Bank, N.V. conferred the ING-FINEX CFO of the Year 2014 Award to Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX) Finance Director Jeng Pascual at Manila Peninsula, Makati on November 19, 2014.

Top financial executives and highly respected finance experts selected and bestowed the 8th ING-FINEX CFO of the Year Award to an Industrial Engineering cum laude graduate from the University of the Philippines Diliman who did not expect himself to be a high-ranking official in the field of finance today.

It was the training I received from my father during adolescence that prepared me for the challenges in the corporate world. ‘Do more than what is expected,’ he said, ‘and be ready when the opportunity arises,” said Pascual as he shared the guidance of his father in facing the challenges of pursuing the path of finance given his engineering background.

“It was the training I received from my father during adolescence that prepared me for the challenges in the corporate world. ‘Do more than what is expected,’ he said, ‘and be ready when the opportunity arises,” said Pascual as he shared the guidance of his father in facing the challenges of pursuing the path of finance given his engineering background.

Indeed, this Engineer-CFO changes the game as the four key attributes and competencies of an eligible awardee – strategist, catalyst, operator, and steward are all greatly reflected in his many roles as the Country Controller of Shell companies in the Philippines, Finance Director of SPEX, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Shell Pension Fund.  Not only that, Pascual is the first ever CFO from a multinational company to be given the award.

For Pascual, earning the coveted title as the 8th ING-FINEX CFO of the Year was made more remarkable as it coincides with SciP’s 100 years in the Philippines.

Pascual now joins the distinguished roster of CFO awardees with Delfin Gonzales Jr., CFO of Globe Telecom in 2007; Sherisa Nuesa, CFO of Manila Water Company in 2008; Jose Sio, CFO of SM Investments Corporation in 2009; Ysmael Baysa, CFO of Jollibee Foods Corporationin 2010; Jaime Ysmael, CFO of Ayala Land in 2011; Jeffrey Lim, CFO of SM Prime Holdings, Inc. in 2012; and, Felipe Yalong, CFO of GMA Network, Inc. in 2012.

“As CFOs, we have been entrusted by our shareholders to grow the investments in the company. As leaders, we are expected to nurture and develop the skills and behaviors of those who will succeed us. As Filipinos, we have the duty to contribute positively to society, and make the Philippines a better place for our children. All these situations necessarily entail personal risks to achieve one's goals. The consequences of poor performances are severe, but the rewards are great for those who succeed,” said Pascual.

Ending with this compelling statement, Pascual proudly receives the accolade that serves as the culmination for the extensive nationwide search for the country’s outstanding CFO.
