University of Santo Tomas UST Eco-Tiger I landed the 8th spot in the prototype category with energy source internal combustion engine (ICE). The core team of UST seniors changed the body of their T400D vehicle to carbon fiber for this competition. University of Perepetual Help System also competed their Dalta ATLAS Valor in the same category.

The Philippines was represented with 11 delegates with University of the Philipines-Dagisik UP, also landing on the 8th spot in the UrbanConcept Category.

Prototype category Winners

In the Mileage Challenge, RMUTP RACING from Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon in Thailand achieved an equivalent of 1,546.9 kilometres on a litre of Ethanol with their Prototype car, the equivalent of driving from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Bangkok, Thailand.

“We are very happy to win. We did our best and we used our experience gathered over the three years of competing, but our number one rule is teamwork,” said Peerapon Booncheuy, team manager for RMUTP.

Other winners in the prototype competition included HuaQi-EV from China with a result of 501.6 km/kWh in the Battery Electric category and TP ECO FLASH from Singapore with a result of 403.3 km/m3 in the hydrogen category.

Drivers’ World Championship Qualifier

At the Drivers World Championship Qualifier, Nanyang E Drive from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore beat other top UrbanConcept cars in a breathtaking race to cross the finish line without running out of their limited allocation of energy.

“We are very happy as the win wasn’t expected. It was nerve-wracking as we were a close second for most of the race. Our secret was honestly just very good teamwork – the team, monitoring every aspect of the car, letting me know how much energy to use and where to use it. So it was a very well-coordinated effort and that to me was the key to our success” shared Colin Ioh, team driver for Nanyang E Drive Internal Combustion Engine ITS Team 5 from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember in Indonesia and team LH – EST from Lac Hong University in Vietnam took second and third place respectively.

The top three teams from the Asia qualifier will face off against the best UrbanConcept teams from the Americas and Europe in the Drivers’ World Championship to be held at Make the Future Live in London, UK, on July 5, 2019. The ultimate winning team will be awarded with an invitation to visit Scuderia Ferrari's exclusive headquarters in Italy. They will participate in exciting workshops and learn from the best at Ferrari.

Norman Koch, Make the Future Live General Manager, said: “The Drivers’ World Championship incorporates both the fuel efficiency of the vehicle with the technique and skills of the driver. This time it is the strategy of handling the vehicles while simultaneously managing fuel efficiency. We saw amazing action and my congratulations goes to all the teams for all their achievements.”

Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2019 culminated this evening at an awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of a regionally diverse crowd of students, from 18 countries across Asia and the Middle East.

Despite not making it to top 3, the Philippine teams felt great pride in their achievement in representing their country in one of the world's longest running student mileage competitions. They hope to take their learnings from this year and come up stronger and better in next year’s Shell Eco-Marathon.

Off-Track Awards

Shell Eco-marathon is more than the track victory. Students are also recognised for their communications, technical innovation, design, safety and perseverance.

This year a new off-track award - Circular Economy Award was introduced to recognise the team which demonstrates “circular economy” thinking in the concept, design and functioning of their vehicle. The objective is to motivate students to think how they can integrate the concept of circular economy in engineering of materials, products and services for real life industrial and consumer solutions

The winner of the Circular Economy award is MMU Grüne Welt from Multimedia University Melaka Campus, Malaysia based on their vehicle design, the circular potential of the components used to manufacture their vehicle and incorporation of an assessment method to analyse environmental impacts. The team received a USD3000 prize in recognition of their achievement.

About Make the Future

Make the Future Live is a global programme bringing people and ideas into collaborate spaces, driving towards a lower-carbon energy future. The programme comes to Malaysia in 2019 bringing together participants from Asia Pacific and beyond.

At the heart of Make the Future Live is Shell Eco-marathon. Over its three-decade history the programme has seen thousands of high school and university students from across the world build ultra-energy-efficient vehicles, in a variety of designs, using a spectrum of energy types.

Every year brings new stories of human endeavour and technical excellence, as teams push the boundaries of what’s possible. In 2019, Make the Future Live, Malaysia will host a regional leg of this global competition programme, Shell Eco-marathon Asia.

About Shell Eco-marathon

In April 2019, Shell Eco-marathon Asia returns to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which hosted the inaugural regional event in 2010. Through the years, Shell Eco-marathon Asia has grown in both number of teams and vehicles over the years. Over 100 student teams from 18 countries around Asia Pacific and the Middle East will compete in 2019. After spending months designing, building and testing their designs, these bright young engineers will put their self-built energy-efficient cars to the test on the iconic Sepang International Circuit.

Shell Eco-marathon Asia will include two key competitions this year. The longest running competition is the Mileage Challenge where teams compete to discover whose car could travel the farthest on the least amount of fuel. In 2018, the winning team of the Asian leg was efficient enough to travel 2,341 kilometres – about the distance from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Yangon, Myanmar – on just one litre of fuel!

In addition, teams will have the opportunity to take part in a qualifier for the Drivers’ World Championship. Matching the proven energy-efficiency of their car with the strategy, skill and speed of the driver, this is a race to see who crosses the finish line first without running out of their limited allocation of energy. Top teams will win their place in the 2019 Drivers’ World Championship, to be held in July in London

Shell Eco-marathon is a visible demonstration of Shell’s commitment to help the world meet its growing energy needs in a responsible way by working together with students, partners and other stakeholders.
